Behind the scenes
What a first shift with Horizon Care actually looks like
The scariest part of starting with a new provider isn't the paperwork — it's the moment a stranger arrives at your door in a uniform. We work hard to make sure that moment doesn't feel strange at all.
Before the shift
- You meet your support worker (or workers) in a short intro call or home visit — never on the day.
- Your care plan is shared with the worker so they know your routine, likes, dislikes and no-gos.
- The office confirms the exact arrival time the day before, and again on the morning.
The shift itself
Your worker arrives 5 minutes early. They introduce themselves, show ID, and check in on how you're feeling. The first shift is usually gentler than usual — a chance to build rhythm rather than tick every box on the plan.
“The first shift is about earning the second one.”
After the shift
- Care notes are logged and reviewed by an RN where clinical.
- We check in the next day — a short text or call — to hear how it felt.
- If something wasn't right, we adjust before the next shift. No awkward conversations.
There's no pressure to lock in a permanent schedule on day one. Most participants start with a trial fortnight so both sides can settle in.
